We accomplished many things during our last week of first quarter. Below are some of the highlights from this week as well as some of the activities to look forward to in the upcoming week.
- In social studies, students finished investigating the question: Who Really Discovered the Americas? We also evaluated our project presentations. We then began our second unit on the exploration and colonization of America and reviewed map skills by playing Latitude and Longitude Bingo. Next week we will focus primarily on Spanish exploration and settlement.
- Students completed their first quarter current events and their Science Expo projects. They are now studying the classification system and focusing on vertebrates, invertebrates, and the six kingdoms of living things. We will sign up for second quarter current events next week.
- Both fifth grade reading classes have continued reading their class novels. Mrs. Nash's reading class has read through chapter six of Shiloh. Students are on chapter nine of Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio by Peg Kehret. As they are reading, students are practicing monitoring their comprehension and using their reading strategies.
- In language arts, students finished their creative writing stories. We also resumed Wordly Wise with our eighth set of words. Students received Wordly Wise #9 on Friday, which will be due Thursday, October 25th. Next week we will begin a grammar unit on nouns.
