We have had an excellent start to the school year in fifth grade! It has been a pleasure getting to know our students and we look forward to working with them over the next several months. Below are some highlights of our busy week.
In language arts this week, we worked together to identify and evaluate the six traits of good writing. Students learned how to analyze writing based on each of the traits and began to explore how they can use them in their own writing. We then brainstormed ideas for the personal narrative writing assignment we will be working on next week.
Students completed their first Wordly Wise packet in class. Wordly Wise is a spelling and vocabulary program in which students learn the spelling and meaning of 15 words each week and test on the words each Friday. They received Wordly Wise 2 on Friday and will need to complete parts 2A-2D by Thursday, August 30th. We will complete part 2E in class. The test over Wordly Wise 2 will be Friday, August 31st.
Both reading classes spent time investigating Question-Answer Relationships as well as seven comprehension strategies. These skills will help students work through each novel. On Monday, Mrs. Jones's class will begin reading Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and Mrs. Nash's class will begin Holes by Louis Sachar.
This week in science we have been working on the scientific method and science process skills. We are currently focusing on measurement.
In social studies, students worked in groups to analyze the significance of two very important aspects of our course: "America" and "History." Students then presented their ideas in class. We also worked on getting familiar with our classroom resources by completing a textbook scavenger hunt and signing onto the online textbook. We will begin our first unit on Native Americans next week.
Please join us for Lower School Curriculum Night Thursday, September 6th!
We will begin in the classrooms at 6:00 pm and will end with a question and answer session. Please arrive early enough to park and join friends in the commons before the classrooms open at 6:00.
